2013. What was going on in my life in 2013, who was I ? Well, I remember thinking to myself, I have a car and I hardly drive it anywhere, why not drive out of town because I can. It’s as simple as that.
At this stage in my life I wasn’t boring but I didn’t travel too far from home. I felt very confined, and this must be where my adventurous side started to kick in, because I remember I kept saying I have to get away and somewhere far.
My birthday was around the corner and I remembered a conversation with an old co worker, telling me that she drove with her family to Savannah for a day trip. I think that’s what made me decide to go there as well but I decided to spend one night. The funny thing is, I didn’t even have enough money to book a hotel! I just used a buy now pay later kind of thing on PayPal. It definitely seemed like a good idea beforehand lol. I really wanted a change in scenery and a chance to break away from this monotonous life. I asked my sisters if they wanted to go with me and they were down, the rest was history. My aunt also ended up tagging along with us.
We stayed at the Hyatt Riverfront hotel, a really beautiful hotel in the heart of everything. We had a few shots, danced in the hallway like we had no home training, and walked across the street to a nightclub. I honestly do not remember drinking that much but I did fall once or twice and I remember my Aunt saying it’s time to go seconds later lol.
The next day we walked to Paula Dean’s restaurant sightseeing on the way. You know I love my soul food!
We did a boat ride in the late afternoon which I think was my first boat ride ever so that was a lot of fun. After that we headed to Tybee Island. This is where I got my very first speeding ticket! I was so pissed lol
We took photos, jumped around, acted silly, and I remember taking a final moment for myself as the sun began to set tuning everyone out, appreciating all that lay before me and focusing on being present, and not taking a single second for granted. Something we people tend to do a lot of.
Even though we weren’t there very long, I really had a great time and a good 23rd birthday. I know there is soo much history in Savannah and there were more things I wanted to do like tours and museums etc. but we didn’t have much time. I truly hope to head back to Savannah someday especially at this point in my life 7 years later. It will be completely nostalgic. I was in a different place, a different person. It’ll be like revisiting an old dream.
